An Evaluation of the Toxicity of Hydraulic Fracturing Injectants∗

چکیده
In the past 10–15 years, innovations in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling have fueled a boom in the production of natural gas from geological formations that were previously unprofitable. The rapid deployment of fracking has been accompanied by concerns about negative externalities. In response, a regulatory regime has emerged that requires disclosure of chemical additives, but preserves a loophole by which firms can claim that such disclosure imperils “trade secrets.” To shed light on the importance of such a disclosure rule, we combine data from wells drilled in two significant gas fields in Wyoming with disclosure data from FracFocus about injected chemicals and materials. We explore the relation between toxicity of injectants, tendency to use the trade secrets shield, and identity of the well operator and the service company that performed the frac job. Our results have implications for the impact on social net benefits of the recently reported merger between two major service companies. JEL Codes: L71, Q35, Q53

Hydraulic Fracturing Length Optimization and its Impact on the Reservoir Performance
Hydraulic fracturing is one of the most common methods of well stimulation for reservoirs with low permeability. Hydraulic fracturing increases the flow capacity, alters flow geometry, bypasses damage and improves recovery factor. The pressure of most of Iranian oil reservoirs is declined and consequently the production is reduced. It is necessary to improve the production by using new stimulat...
متن کاملNumerical Evaluation of Hydraulic Fracturing Pressure in a Two-Phase Porous Medium
Hydraulic fracturing is a phenomenon in which cracks propagate through the porous medium due to high pore fluid pressure. Hydraulic fracturing appears in different engineering disciplines either as a destructive phenomenon or as a useful technique. Modeling of this phenomenon in isothermal condition requires analysis of soil deformation, crack and pore fluid pressure interactions. In this paper...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Hydraulic Frac-turing Process for an Iranian Gas Field in the Persian Gulf
Most of the Iranian oil and gas wells in the Persian Gulf region are producing through their natural productivity and, in the near future, the use of stimulation methods will be undoubtedly necessary. Hydraulic fracturing as a popular technique can be a stimulation candidate. Due to the absence of adequate research in this field, numerical simulation can be an appropriate method to investigate ...
متن کاملDisplacement Discontinuity Analysis of the Effects of Various Hydraulic Fracturing Parameters on the Crack Opening Displacement (COD)
The combination of horizontal drilling along with hydraulic fracturing has significantly improved the production of hydrocarbon reservoirs and made it possible to extract the relatively impermeable and uneconomical reservoirs. The production rate of oil and gas wells increases proportional to hydraulic fracture aperture or crack opening displacement (COD). This is an important parameter i...
متن کاملOn the crack propagation modeling of hydraulic fracturing by a hybridized displacement discontinuity/boundary collocation method
Numerical methods such as boundary element and finite element methods are widely used for the stress analysis in solid mechanics. This study presents boundary element method based on the displacement discontinuity formulation to solve general problems of interaction between hydraulic fracturing and discontinuities. The crack tip element and a higher order boundary displacement collocation techn...
